Maoi. Cruising to Easter Island

This remote 64-square-mile island is best known for its giant monoliths, referred to as Maoi. These stone statues are several centuries old and remain to be cryptic in their reason for creation. Although controversy exists over the history behind these man-made massive structures many archeologists believe they date back to 700 A.D.

Happy Traveler Comment
I just wanted to thank you [Jeremy] for the wonderful trip that you arranged for us, there is no way that it could have been more perfect. Perfect trip for our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Thank you so much. — Connie F.

Maoi. Cruising to Easter Island

The largest of the Maoi statues, referred to as Paro, stands at almost 33 feet tall and weighs over 80 tons. Most of the structures stand at least 13 feet high and all are relatively similar in design. Unfortunately many of these magnificent structures were ruined centuries ago when war broke out between the Rapa Nui people. Although some of the Maoi were not harmed in the conflicts, several have been reconstructed or remain damaged.

Rano Kau. Cruising to Easter Island

Also available for exploration on Easter Island is its two remarkable extinct volcano craters. You can travel to Orongo Village which is set directly next to the crater of Rano Raraku. Inside this volcanic quarry you will find the spot where the Maoi structures were originally made. Here you will also have a chance to see the “kneeling” Maoi, that has carried tons of controversy all on its own. Also in Orongo you will also have the chance to view the 16th century ritualistic site of the birdman cult. This location on the island has several petroglyphs, or rock carvings, that feature bird like man creatures. Rano Kau, the islands other volcanic crater, is known for its absolutely phenomenal beauty. Approximately 1,000 feet tall and filed with water, Rano Kau is one of the islands natural beauties.

Being one of the most remote islands in the world it can be difficult to find travel arrangements to the island. Even cruise vessels have limited access to Easter Island and those that do tend to sale out quickly.
