Happy Traveler Comment
This past Dec., we went on a family cruise to the Caribbean. I was very glad I booked the cruise using CruiseExperts.com. Jeremy was just fantastic. We went on board and forgot to print out our excursions but she came through in just hours to make sure we got our tickets. The staff is very quick at responding and for the great price, worth it all the way. Thanks CruiseExperts.com for giving us this great chance to enjoy something we always thought was way beyond our means. — Jane W.

The Active Discovery Cruises are designed for those who like an action packed adventure! The Active Discovery Program on an Avalon River Cruise will have you hiking, biking, and canoeing through Europe. Explore an underground salt mine, take a guided climb up a mountain, venture inside an ice cave, help a local farmer with his crops, or maybe even compose your own waltz! The possibilities are endless and full of active adventure!

Our personal favorite Active Discovery adventure on an Avalon River Cruise is the 8-day cruise from Linz to Budapest on the Avalon Luminary. This amazing cruise features some of the best activities to choose from that will make this river cruise one to remember!

Travelers on this cruise will begin their journey in Linz and we suggest arriving the day before your cruise so that you have plenty of time to explore this fabulous city!  On the day of departure you will need to be on board the Avalon Luminary by 5p.m. for the welcome reception and to begin your Avalon river cruise adventure!

The next morning you will awake in the beautiful town of Engelhartszell, near the German border. Once in l you get to pick which adventure best suits you best. You can visit the Engelhartszell Abbey and tour their brewery and sensory garden. Along with a cheese and beer tasting brought to you by the Trappist monks. Or, go on a guided hike along the route between the Austria and Germany borders that smugglers once took during World War II. The adventure doesn’t end with your morning excursion. Everyone will meet back up at the Luminary and hike along the Danube to witness the Luminary pass through the Schlogen Oxbow. That evening you will return to Linz where you have the opportunity to do some more exploring!

Day three you will be in Mauthausen. This morning pick between a tour of the Mauthausen concentration camp, a visit to the St. Florian Monastery, or bike ride to a roman defense fort and browse through the museum. Later that afternoon you will set sail again and dock in Grein. Here you will have the opportunity to visit their historical theater and explore Greinburg or Clam Castle.

Day four is started in Spitz where you can choose to paddle a canoe down the Danube, take a bike tour from Spitz to Krems, go wine tasting, or enjoy local encounters that showcase a hands-on experience. After your morning in Spitz jump back on board and travel to Vienna. Here you can take an optional guided hike through the vineyards and enjoy some wine tasting.

Days five and six are all about Vienna. An why not? It is one of the most adventurous cities in Europe! Each day you will have several Exciting activities to choose from. They even feature a jogging tour for those who really want to get active. My personal favorite tour offered is on the first day. They have coined it the Insiders Tour and it is amazing! This adventure can change but it will always consist of something hands on with the locals. It could be attending a cooking class to a course on etiquette and protocol. The possibilities are endless, I think that’s what really makes this adventure so exciting!

After your days in Vienna you will get to explore Visegrad, where you can opt to see a Medieval Knights Tournament or take a guided hike through the Danube-Ipoly National Park. Before setting sail to your final destination in Budapest. That morning in Budapest you will have the opportunity to choose your final Active Discovery on your Avalon River Cruise.
